John Richard "Dick" Showalter

August 23, 1922 -- September 28, 1997

Dick Showalter was the first mayor of Salisbury, holding the position for 22 1/2 years. He was instrumental in attaining the New England Gear Works, the Professional Building and the Salisbury Ambulance Association, where he served as an Emergancy Medical Technician for over 13 years. He was a committeeman for the Somerset County Republican Party for six terms, serving on the executive board as well as treasurer. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving in the European theatre for 3 1/2 years, and was a charter member of the Salisbury VFW and a member of the American Legion. He also was a member of the Salisbury Lions Club and the Meyersdale Masonic Lodge. John "Dick" Showalter was the son of Samuel Curtis and Mabel (Beynon) Showalter.
