Comments: My great-grand-father, Henry Lewis Kraft, grew up somewhere in Elk Lick Twp. He was born in 1849, perhaps in Summit Twp. He apparently felt it was a great place to be from; by 1870, he was living in Kansas City, MO, where I grew up. His older siblings claim to have been born in Hessen-Darmstadt. I am most interested in German immigrants arriving in the 1840's give or take. Also, do I have any relatives still living in the area?? Early census enumerators spelled the surname Groft, and that may have stuck on some branches.

Comments: You have a very informative site. I followed a link on the Somerset Co. site for the Fate name to your pictures. I recently found the obituary for my husband's ggrandfather, Wilson Wesley Grove who died in 1934. He has a sister, Mrs. David Fate of Boynton, PA. Have you seen this name in connection with any of the Fate names in your family? I have names of his sisters from the census of which one of them should be the Mrs. David Fate. Catherine was born abt. 1853, Ellamina or Eamina born about 1860 and Emoline/Emma G. born about 1862. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Comments: Doing geneology research on the Christner family. Stopped in your post office to get directions on the location of Christner Road. The postmistress was very helpful. I found Christner Hollow Road today and found the cemetery next to it. I was a little perturbed when I saw the cemetery next to the Limestone plant. What a shame to let some industry come in and just move headstones in a sloppy way and put a head marker at the front. It was so sad.... I didn't have any relatives there but I feel sorry for the people who sold out to the limestone corporation. I feel that what the head stones have to tell future generations is so important. Just sharing my thoughts on what I saw today. Sue Christner

Comments: I have been fishing on the Casselman river for many years and have always loved your town. I remember when the tornado hit the town, that had to be frightening! I found your site while trying to search for Indian artifacts on the web and boy am I glad to have found it. I never new the history around you community and have found it very interesting. I was just there on 04-15-2000 while trout fishing. I spend much time fishing the Maryland side of the casselman river on the delayed harvest area. I can't tell yu how much i love the area. Are the farmers receptive to people wanting to hunt for Indian artifacts in ther plowed fields? (with permission of course) Everyone seems so friendly there. Your site is just GREAT!!!!!!!

Comments: Lori, I was looking at the Brownie troop photo. I think the girl in the back next to Michelle Lowery is Patti Vena. The girl next to Debbie Stein may be Connie Murray and a possibility for the girl next to Tammy Albright could be Julie Adams. I think during this time Karen Butler's Mom was the leader. She may know who the girls are also. I remember being in the Brownies for just a short time just before going on to the Girl Scouts. Michelle Lowery's Mom Alta and Cindy Ringler's Mom, Kay were the Girl Scout leaders for a long time, they may have some photographs of us kids in Girl Scout uniforms. I wish I had some pictures to share, but the one thing I still have is the complete Girl Scout uniform we wore back then. I want to thank you once again for the information on the photo with my Dad. I am getting a copy made. Thanks Again, Patty (Engle) Ackerman

Comments: Great web page. I have been interested in Salisbury ever since I found out I was descended from Clement Engle and Margarette Weimer and their last Son Samuel. Visited twice back in 95/96, lovely country. I tried to find Clement(Lowry) grave but I was unsuccessfull even though I knew within a 100 yards where it was supposed to be. I am still trying to find documentation about the birthplace of Clement. Earliest record I have, is of him being confirmed in the Church in Frederick MD in 1767. Should have been about 20 then. I also have been trying to find out if he served in the Revolutionary War before his service in the local militia of 1883.

Henderson and whos dad was Andrew Henderson. I do not have any living relatives that can tell me about them. I know my Grandma Fleshman's maiden name was Clester. Her dad's name was James and her mother's name was Adah(Foster) Clester. Her Grandmother foster was formerly Sarah Elizabeth Henderson. Know one knows anything about the Clester's or Foster's. My Grandmother graduated from West Cooper District Two School in Blaine Co. OK and then took over teaching until she met and married my Grandfather Harry Fleshman. How they got to Ok, I have not found, ad I only find Clesters in Somerset Co. PA and Washington Co Ohio and Grant Co Indiana. And all go back to the Peter Clester of Somerset Co.Pa. Any information would be appreciated. I like your webpage it has been interesting to view and has been helpful also to verify what information I found of Somerset connections from other sites. Since you have so many pictures of the area, I was wondering if you have any of the old Peter Shirer store/tavern or the funeral home that was destroyed by trhe tornado. The Shirer's came through there and Peter Shirer and his father stayed, while his brother Valentine, my ancestor, moved on to Muskingum Co., OH. Peter was instrumental in laying out Salisbury and was the third postmaster of the town. Would be interested in any history you know of in relation to the Shirers. I was told that Salisbury or Elk Lick Twp was once known as Shirertown. Don't know if that was true or not.

Comments: How incredible to think that Salisbury (all 732 of them) has a web page. I was born and raised in Salisbury; the son of W.C. Shultz and Mary Jo (Lichty) Shultz. I left home in 1964 and have lived many different places since then. My mother still lives in Salisbury. How strange it was to see the homepage download and find that the first picture is looking north up Ord st. And the house on the right side is the house that I was raised in. The upstairs window visible in the picture was my bedroom. The house was built for George Schramn apprx. 1904. And has been in the Schramn family since it was built. My parents bought the house from George Schramn's daughter(my Aunt Edith Walker) in 1945. My mother a Schramn descendent is currently still living in the house. The house was severely damaged by the tornando but was completely restored to better than original condition. In addition the second picture on the homepage with reference to the post office shows a carriage in front of the post office. That was known as the "Salibury Hack". The towns first Taxi. My great grandfather George Schramn was also part owner of that service. I have downloaded the entire site and made a copy to send to my mother who will also be able to provide additional information on the town. Thanks so much for caring about a very small town that is very dear to my heart and will always be HOME.

The New Kensington High School band, the Ken Hi Red Raiders, used to go to the old CCC camp on Mount Davis Road outside of town in the 1950's and early 60's for a week of Band Camp. We spent a week at the camp learning our football season shows and on Friday went into town and did a parade and put on all the shows in the old baseball field, remember the old wooden bleachers, for the town's people. Then got to spent the evening walking around town, even got to go the the movie house once. Then back on the buses, and back to the camp to pack to go home. Many fond memories of the town and the camp, which is no longer there, only the pond remains, all the buildings have been torn down. Wonder if anyone took any pictures, or even remembers, the parades or shows.

Comments: HI, your page is very nice, and I thank you for taking th time to put it up. I wonder if you could help me I am doing a family tree and I have been told that I am a decented of Cheif Cornplanter. I tried to access the page about the Chief but could not. I was wondering if you have any information about his decentants. I am looking for a match to an Estella Butler, who I am told was the Chief's grand daughter. If you have any information I would greatly apprectiate it. Thank you. Jim Patterson

Comments: I was the Naval Journalist aboard the AMERICA during the 1968 West Pac cruise. I have a hollow spot in my stomach as I write this note after reading you home page. I knew Lts. Duncan and Ashall and would spoke with them after each flight operation in the debrief room shared between VA-82,85 and 86. Although I was young at the time what struck me most about them as an aircrew was their sense of living a profound adventure, boyish yet very professional. They dressed up once as World War I aviators. Ashall's red hair was always matted down with sweat...Duncan was so tall and slim that I thought his poopy pressurized flight suit must be keeping his together. On the night they were lost there were SAMS being called out everywherere. No one like to go near Vinh Son because it was so near the HCM trail and we knew that the North Vietnamese had moved a lot of missiles and AAA below the 19th. I would go over to IOIC (integrated operating intelligence center) an listen to the strike and SAR frequencies so I could ask the right questions in the debrief room. I firmly believe that Duncan and Ashall were lost when they were taking radical maneuvers to avoid multiple SAMs. At this time in the cruise everybody knew that the SAMs couldn't track and stay with a plane that was turning diving and making radical changes in directions. In order to counter these actions the North Vietnamese started to take multiple shot from multiple SAM sites. That way they improved their chances of hitting something and decreased their chances of getting a Shrike or Standard Arm missile in their radar van. I think the kids today would discribe Duncan and Ashall as awesome. I cannot think of one without thinking of the other. I think you can take comfort in the fact that they were together life and that if they must die they could not think of anyone they would rather stand before Saint Peter with. True friends who gave the last full measure together. May eternal rest be granted to them and my they be with HIM in Paradise. I
