The Korean War erupted on June 25, 1950, when the North Korean Army - organized and
equipped by the Soviet Union - invaded the Republic of (South) Korea. Three days later,
President Harry S. Truman ordered U.S. forces to defend South Korea. The fighting raged on
for more than three years. The active hostilities ended with an armistice on July 27, 1953.
